MHRA Approves First Testosterone Cream for Postmenopausal Women in the UK

Major milestone for women’s health in the UK.

The MHRA has approved the first-ever testosterone cream for postmenopausal women in the UK.

AndroFeme® Cream 10mg/ml is a female-specific testosterone treatment for hypoactive sexual desire dysfunction (HSDD) – a distressing and often overlooked condition that affects an estimated 6-13% of women in Europe.

HSDD involves a persistent loss of sexual desire that causes personal distress. While testosterone is often thought of as a “male hormone,” women also produce it in smaller amounts, and it plays a crucial role in sexual motivation and satisfaction. Clinical studies have shown that testosterone therapy can improve desire and sexual satisfaction in postmenopausal women with low levels.

Already licensed in Australia since 2020, AndroFeme® will launch in the UK in 2026, making the UK the fourth country to approve it, following Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

“I am delighted that AndroFeme has received a licence for use in women in the UK. As a menopause specialist, I am all too familiar with the distress that low libido and reduced sexual satisfaction can have on women and in turn, on their relationships. It saddens me to see this area of health so neglected – it’s as fundamental to our wellbeing as physical, psychological, and emotional health. Women can now feel confident that there is a licensed medication made specifically for them and with their needs in mind. At Health in Menopause, we support women to engage in the difficult conversations around sex and are happy to prescribe AndroFeme alongside HRT to optimise the health of women in midlife and beyond.”
