Blood tests aren't always needed to diagnose or treat menopause - but in certain situations they can help inform your treatment plan.

For most women approaching menopause naturally, blood tests aren't required to start treatment — symptoms and medical history are usually enough. This is in line with NICE guidance and British Menopause Society standards. That said, there are situations where blood tests can be genuinely helpful:

Tests we offer
Through our clinic, we can arrange the following blood tests where clinically appropriate. Each one tells us something different about what's happening in your body.
Indicates ovarian function. Useful for investigating early menopause or POI, but not routinely needed for typical menopause diagnosis.
Your main oestrogen level. Sometimes measured to check absorption.
Thyroid problems share many symptoms with menopause. Worth checking if you have known thyroid disease or suspect it may be contributing.
Often low in midlife women and can worsen fatigue, low mood and bone health concerns. Easy to correct once identified.
Cholesterol and cardiovascular markers. Becomes more important after menopause as risk profiles shift.
For women considering testosterone replacement, baseline and follow-up levels help guide dosing safely.
How it works
We'll only recommend blood tests if they'll genuinely inform your care. We'll explain why, what each one shows, and what it costs before you decide.
If you proceed, your blood can be taken during your visit to our Nottingham or Sutton Coldfield clinic - or, if you'd prefer somewhere closer to home, at one of Nationwide Pathology's satellite phlebotomy clinics across the UK.
Your sample is processed by Nationwide Pathology and your results, along with your clinician's interpretation, are sent securely via Semble within 7-10 working days.

We offer six test profiles, from a focused hormone check through to a comprehensive menopause panel. Your clinician will recommend which is right for your situation.

Phlebotomy at a Nationwide Pathology clinic

Paid directly to the phlebotomist on the day. Nationwide Pathology will confirm the exact fee when you contact them.
Your total fee is your chosen profile plus the phlebotomy fee. We'll always confirm the full cost with you before any tests are arranged.
If you'd prefer to have your bloods taken locally through your GP, we can usually advise on the specific tests to request.
Your results
When your results come back, we review them in the context of your symptoms, medical history and treatment goals. You'll receive a written summary explaining what each result means and how it affects your plan.
Blood samples are processed by Nationwide Pathology. Within 7-10 working days of your sample being taken, you'll receive a secure email from our patient system, Semble, with a link to your results, your clinician's interpretation and an explanation of what they mean for you. You can access this securely by entering your date of birth.
Where appropriate, we'll fine-tune your HRT dose, recommend supplements or adjust your treatment approach based on what we find. With your permission, we can also share the results with your NHS GP.

No, not usually. NICE and British Menopause Society guidance is clear that blood tests aren't required to diagnose menopause or start HRT in women over 45 with typical symptoms. We follow that standard.
For women over 45 with typical symptoms, FSH testing isn't recommended — your symptoms and cycle changes are more reliable than the test itself. FSH can be helpful for women under 45 where early menopause is suspected.
Test profiles range from £70 to £265, depending on which tests are included. A phlebotomy fee is added on top — £30 if your blood is taken at our Nottingham or Sutton Coldfield clinic, or a variable fee paid directly to the phlebotomist at a Nationwide Pathology satellite clinic. We'll always quote the full cost upfront before you decide.
Most results are returned within 7 to 10 working days. Your sample is processed by Nationwide Pathology, and your results — along with our clinician's interpretation — are sent securely via Semble, our patient system. You'll access them by entering your date of birth.

We review every result in the context of your wider health. If something needs further investigation, we'll explain clearly what it means and recommend the right next step — which may include speaking to your GP or a specialist.
