Dr Alison Macbeth nominated for prestigious William Cullen award

You won’t hear this direct from our humble colleague Dr Alison Macbeth, so it’s our great honour to spread the good news that Dr Alison has been nominated for the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde William Cullen Innovation Award.

This prestigious award is to recognise a clinician “as having made a significant contribution to local teaching or service innovation in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.”

The NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde website notes:

William Cullen (1710-1790) began his career as a medical lecturer and pioneer teacher of Chemistry at Glasgow University, rising to international fame as the leading figure in Edinburgh University medical school and served as president of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He was appointed the King’s Physician in Scotland and became the most influential medical lecturer of his generation.  His private consultations survive as a remarkable archive of several thousand letters.

Dr Alison is a Breast Specialist Doctor in an NHS Breast Unit in Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow. When she first started at the hospital, she saw that something was missing – where was the doctor who had knowledge of both breast cancer treatment AND menopause care? It seemed obvious to her that each breast cancer clinic should also have a menopause specialist and so she undertook specialist training with the British Menopause Society and she became that doctor.

Dr Alison was responsible for setting up the first menopause clinic within a breast unit in Scotland. For this reason, her peers have nominated her for the William Cullen Award.

The award ceremony will take place in May, and though we’re hoping for red carpets and paparazzi, we expect the award ceremony will be a rather more understated affair.

We hope you will join with the whole Health in Menopause team in wishing Dr Alison the very best of luck for this much deserved accolade.
